Nigeria Commits To Creating Sustainable Future For Environmental Sanitation Practices
Nigeria’s Ministry of Environment has announced its intention to create a sustainable future for Nigeria’s environmental sanitation practices by reviving the evaluation of students’ knowledge of environmental sanitation and hygiene.
The Ministry stated that the evaluation would assist Nigerian students in strengthening their knowledge of the importance of personal hygiene, a clean environment, and a lifestyle that protects the climate, as well as enhancing their critical thinking skills on environmental sanitation issues. Mr Olubunmi Olusanya, Director, Pollution Control and Environmental Health, Ministry of Environment, said in a speech at the “2024 National Environmental Sanitation Day Junior Secondary School Quiz Competition” held in Abuja on Tuesday: “Therefore, I urge you to use this opportunity to showcase your knowledge and know that every question is a privilege to learn and grow as an agent of change.” Please take the message “Go Greener, Stay Clean, Climate Change is Real” to your respective schools, homes, and wherever you go at the end of this event.”
Olusanya urged students to keep their environment clean at all times, emphasising that the country’s current cholera outbreak is the result of poor sanitation and hygiene practices.
He stated that environmental sanitation practices such as regular cleaning would aid in the prevention of germ transmission and illness.
He stated, “Let me take this opportunity to express the Ministry’s gratitude to the Federal Ministry of Education, the management, and teachers of the schools participating in this quiz competition, for their commitment to developing the next generation of leaders and change-makers.” We also thank Breakthrough Action Nigeria for their unwavering support in making today’s event a success.”
Mrs Mailafiya Danlami Hassana, a representative from the Federal Ministry of Education, explained that the quiz competition on “Environmental Sanitation and Hygiene, and Climate Change” is designed to help students reflect on the importance of sanitation and hygiene practices.
Mrs Danlami stated that environmental sanitation and hygiene are not just words, but pillars of a healthy and sustainable lifestyle.
