Gender Mobile, ICPC Hold Conference On Sexual Harassment In Abuja
Omowumi Ogunrotimi, Executive Director of the Gender Mobile Initiative, has revealed that preparations are underway for a conference aimed at addressing the pervasive issue of sexual harassment on campuses, with a comprehensive focus on prevention frameworks to significantly reduce the social menace.
Omowumi stated on Monday that “sexual harassment in educational institutions is a serious problem that jeopardises the safety, dignity, and academic integrity of both victims and institutions.”
“It is critical that we establish a learning environment in which all students and educators can pursue their objectives without fear or intimidation.
“To achieve this, comprehensive policies and effective prevention strategies are required,” Omowumi stated.
Against this backdrop, her organisation, the Gender Mobile Initiative, is hosting a stakeholder engagement on sexual harassment prevention at the country’s universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education in collaboration with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
The project, titled “A Consultative Policy Dissemination and Implementation Conference of Stakeholders on Sexual Harassment Prevention in Tertiary Education Institutions,” aims to prevent the pernicious trend of sexual harassment at Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
According to the Executive Director of the Gender Mobile Initiative, the event will take place on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, in Abuja.
Prof Tahir Mamman, Minister of Education; Uju Kennedy Ohanenye, Minister of Women Affairs; and Dr Musa Aliyu, Chairman of the ICPC, are the keynote speakers.
Legislators from relevant committees, state education commissioners, student union bodies, educational policymakers, and others are also expected to attend.
