NDDC To Host Maiden Niger Delta Sports Festival In 2025
Uyo, AKWA IBOM STATE – The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) will host the inaugural Niger Delta Sports Festival from April 1st to 9th, 2025, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
The announcement was made today by Seledi Thompson-Wakama, Director of Corporate Affairs for the NDDC.
The festival marks a key initiative in the NDDC’s 25th-anniversary celebrations and aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision for national sports development.
The multi-sport event aims to unearth and nurture sporting talent within the nine states of the Niger Delta region.
Over ten Olympic-style sporting disciplines will be featured, providing a platform for thousands of young athletes to showcase their abilities and compete for glory.
“We understand the transformative power of sports,” stated Thompson-Wakama.
“As a key stakeholder in Nigeria, we want to contribute significantly to sports development, particularly responding to President Tinubu’s mandate to foster talent and innovation.”
The NDDC plans to collaborate with state governments to develop sports infrastructure and programs.
The festival’s objectives extend beyond competition. It seeks to:
Identify and nurture elite athletes:
Supporting the development of national and international-level athletes, paving the way for professional careers and economic independence.
Promote grassroots sports participation: Increasing access to sports at the community level.
Boost regional sporting competitiveness: Reinvigorating the Niger Delta’s dominance in Nigerian sports.
Foster unity and security: Using sports as a tool to strengthen relationships and improve security within the region.
The NDDC is partnering with Project Consultant Dunamis Icon Limited to ensure the successful execution of the festival.
Further details regarding registration, participating sports, and other event logistics will be released in the coming weeks.
The NDDC anticipates the festival to be a vibrant celebration of the Niger Delta’s rich sporting heritage and its potential to continue leading Nigerian sports.
