ECOWAS Court President Meets With Guinea-Bissau Ambassador Amidst Regional Challenges
Abuja, Nigeria – Honourable Justice Ricardo Cláudio Monteiro Gonçalves, President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, has met with His Excellency, Mr. João Ribeiro Butiam Có, Ambassador of Guinea-Bissau and Permanent Representative to ECOWAS, for a courtesy and working visit at the Court’s Abuja headquarters.
The meeting, held on in Abuja’s is focused on critical regional issues and the challenges that the ECOWAS Court faces.
The discussions focused on the overall state of the ECOWAS Community, with a particular emphasis on the significant challenges facing the Court.
One major concern raised was the Court’s ability to enforce its rulings, which has long been a problem.
The recent withdrawal of three member states from the Community sparked debate, highlighting the complexities and implications of such departures.
President Gonçalves and Ambassador Có discussed the broader socio-political landscape of the ECOWAS region.
They emphasised the critical importance of ensuring peace, security, and democratic governance across all member states, especially in light of current challenges.
President Gonçalves expressed appreciation for the Ambassador’s visit, emphasising the Court’s unwavering commitment to upholding justice and the rule of law in the ECOWAS region.
He reiterated the Court’s commitment to working with all stakeholders to navigate the complexities of recent regional developments while ensuring the Court’s continued effectiveness.
The meeting is viewed as a critical step towards strengthening relations between the Court and member states as ECOWAS addresses its evolving challenges.
