RAPE/DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Operatives Arrest Three For Gang-Raping 12-Year-Old Girl In Edo
Operatives of the Edo State Police Command have arrested three people for allegedly gang-raping a 12-year-old girl identified as Miss Esther in Okpella, Etsako East Local Government Area.
Umoru Ozigi, the State Commissioner of Police, disclosed this in Benin City during a visit to the Command Headquarters by Mrs. Edesili Anani, the Administrator of the Office of the Edo State First Lady.
Ozigi, who assured the victim that justice would be served, confirmed that the three suspects are currently in police custody.
Anani had commended the police for their prompt response and pleaded for the little girl’s justice.
She claimed that the minor was gang-raped by five men on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2024, in Igiafodo Awuyemi, Okpella, Etsako East Local Government Area.
The administrator from the Office of the Edo State First Lady, who also visited the victim at the Daisy Ehanire Danjuma Centre, vowed that the perpetrators would face the full wrath of the law.
According to her, the Edo State Government will do everything possible to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“Edo State has zero tolerance for any form of violence, and we stand firmly behind the victim,” she said.
She chastised the perpetrators for allegedly filming the act and sharing it on social media, claiming that the evidence strengthened their case against them.
“The video evidence makes it impossible for anyone to conceal this crime. The law will take its course, and these people will face serious consequences,” she added.
Anani also lauded the Okuokpellagbe of Okpella, His Royal Highness, Lukeman Akemokue, and his wife, Blessing, for taking prompt action in bringing the case to light and ensuring that both the victim and her mother were relocated to Benin City for safety and medical care due to threats to their lives.
“I would like to commend Your Highness. He did a fantastic job with his wife. It happened in his community, Okpella Kingdom, and they did not hide it; when he saw the videos, he took it up. And I want to say that when things like this happen, speak up for someone else because tomorrow it could be your child,” she said.
Akemokue, the Okuokpellagbe of Okpella, commended Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo and the First Lady’s office for their proactive approach.
Akemokue emphasised that the Okpella community will continue to support the administration.
