Nigeria, Rwanda To Partner On Environmental Sustainability, Focusing On Plastic Waste Management
The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has announced a new partnership with Rwanda to address environmental issues, with a specific focus on plastic waste management.
The collaboration comes after Dr. Innocent Barikor, Director General of NESREA, met with the Rwandan High Commission in Abuja on Monday.
Dr. Barikor emphasised Nigeria’s transition to a circular economy and the recent ban on single-use plastics, as well as the importance of learning from Rwanda’s success in combating plastic pollution.
He expressed a strong desire to share best practices and expertise with Rwanda, especially in the area of plastic waste management.
NESREA hopes to capitalise on Rwanda’s significant progress in this field through collaborative efforts, including potential staff training via study visits.
Dr. Barikor praised Rwanda’s strong commitment to environmental sustainability and innovation, and expressed gratitude to the Rwandan government for its ongoing support.
Ambassador Christophe Bazivamo, Rwanda’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, acknowledged the significant challenge of plastic pollution and expressed Rwanda’s willingness to collaborate with Nigeria.
He emphasised the importance of environmental protection in achieving sustainable development, calling it a top priority for any responsible government.
This collaboration promises to significantly enhance both countries’ environmental protection efforts.
The collaboration is likely to include knowledge sharing, capacity building initiatives, and the implementation of joint projects aimed at reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainable environmental practices.
Further details about the partnership are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
