Maritime Industry Mourns As Dakuku Peterside Laments Loss Of Chris Asoluka
The Nigerian maritime community is in mourning following the death of Dr. Chris Asoluka, a well-known maritime technocrat.
Dr. Dakuku Peterside, former Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), expressed his deep sorrow, stating that Dr. Asoluka’s death has left a significant void in the sector.
In a statement released today, Dr. Peterside described Dr. Asoluka’s death as a profound shock. He described the deceased as a “mentor, supporter, and adviser” who played an important role during his time at NIMASA.
“Dr. Asoluka represented progressive thinking and was always willing to share his perspectives on maritime issues,” Dr. Peterside stated. “He mentored countless people, nurturing talent and making significant contributions to the industry’s growth.”
Dr. Peterside emphasised Dr. Asoluka’s experience and unwavering dedication to maritime development. “Dr. Asoluka was an expert and indispensable consultant on maritime issues. I looked up to him during and after my time at NIMASA; he was always willing to offer advice. “His commitment to maritime development was unparalleled,” he said.
The former NIMASA DG also acknowledged Dr. Asoluka’s significant contributions to the Cabotage Act and its implementation, describing him as a “policy thought leader whose ideas shaped the Nigerian maritime industry.”
Peterside, a management turnaround expert and former federal lawmaker, emphasised that Dr. Asoluka’s voice and opinions are widely respected and extend beyond Nigeria’s borders. He cited the deceased’s various positions, including Chairman of Nigeria’s Oil and Gas Free Zones Authority (OGFZA), Member of the Nigeria Chamber of Shipping Governing Board, and Chairman of the Maritime Development Committee.
“Dr. Asoluka also served as Legislative Adviser during the passage of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Act, 2007, among numerous other responsibilities both within and outside Nigeria,” Peterside said.
Dr. Peterside sent his heartfelt condolences to the Asoluka family, the people of Imo State, and the entire nation. He lamented the passing of a “patriotic Nigerian who offered his expertise when called upon at various points in his illustrious career.”
The maritime industry is now reflecting on Dr. Chris Asoluka’s lasting legacy and invaluable contributions to the growth of Nigeria’s maritime sector. Details about funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
