Obi Mourns Pope Francis, Calls Him ‘Moral Compass In A Troubled World’
Mr Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State and Labour Party presidential candidate in 2023, issued a heartfelt statement following the death of His Holiness Pope Francis, describing the late pontiff as a “moral compass in a troubled world.”
Obi’s tribute shared on his official social media channels, painted a picture of a leader whose life and pontificate profoundly impacted not only the Catholic Church but the entire global community.
“Pope Francis’ death marks the end of a significant era in the spiritual and moral leadership of not only the Catholic Church but also the larger global community,” Obi said.
Reflecting on his personal interactions with the Pope, the former governor stated that he had “the privilege of meeting him on three occasions,” and that Pope Francis consistently “embodied the virtues of faith, hope, and compassion.” He also praised the late pontiff’s humility, wisdom, and moral courage.
Obi emphasised the Pope’s unwavering commitment to the poor and marginalised, his passionate advocacy for justice and human dignity, and his relentless pursuit of peace and unity in a world increasingly riven by conflict and division.
“His deep concern for the poor, his unwavering advocacy for moral leadership, and his defence of human dignity earned him the admiration of people of all faiths and nations,” Obi stated.
Obi brought up his own connection to the late Pope, mentioning his membership in the Scholas Occurrentes Foundation, a global initiative founded by Pope Francis to promote education, dialogue, and youth empowerment.
He emphasised the Pope’s lasting legacy of promoting compassion and justice in society through education and moral guidance.
“Pope Francis dedicated his life to the service of God and humanity,” Obi said. “His legacy will live on not only in the hearts of believers, but also in the global conscience that he helped shape with grace, clarity, and conviction.”
Obi expressed his condolences to the Universal Church on behalf of himself, his family, and the millions of Nigerians who have been inspired by the Pope’s life and teachings.
He concluded his tribute with a prayer for Pope Francis’ eternal rest and divine guidance on the Church, which he led with unwavering love and humility.
