Air Force, Police Personnel Clash In Delta State ‘Embarrassing Incident’, Sparks Investigation
The Delta State Police Command has condemned a “embarrassing incident” in which Air Force personnel stationed at the Jeddo Air Force Base attacked officers of the Delta State Police Quick Response Squad (QRS).
The incident occurred on February 11th, around 5:00 PM, and involved an unwarranted assault on police officers who had apprehended a suspect on drug charges.
According to a press release from Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the incident began with a routine crime prevention patrol.
QRS officers stopped a Toyota Corolla (AKD-73-FL), whose occupants fled the scene. After a brief pursuit, police apprehended 25-year-old Ibohama Precious and confiscated suspected Indian hemp, Canadian loud, and other hard drugs.
While transporting the suspect and evidence to the station, the police officers were stopped by an Air Force checkpoint in Jeddo.
The Air Force personnel demanded the suspect’s release, which police officers refused. This refusal resulted in an unprovoked attack by Air Force personnel on the police officers.
“This incident is truly embarrassing,” the statement emphasised. It was noted that the Delta State Police Command has always had a positive working relationship with the state’s other security agencies.
The Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, and Air Force officials have launched a joint investigation into the incident.
Similar incidents are being avoided through the implementation of preventative measures. The nature of the measures remains unknown at this time.
The investigation is expected to shed light on the attackers’ motivations and determine appropriate disciplinary actions. The condition of the affected police officers is currently unknown.
