Anambra Govt Accused Of Rights Violation In Arrest Of Traditional Doctor, Akwa Okuko
By Chuks Eke
Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, a prominent human rights lawyer, has condemned the arrest of Chief Chidozie Nwangwu, also known as Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki, as a flagrant violation of his fundamental human rights.
Nwangwu, a well-known traditional doctor, was arrested on Saturday inside the office of Anambra State’s Deputy Governor, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, following an invitation to a meeting.
In a press statement issued Sunday, Ejiofor claims that Nwangwu’s arrest is directly related to his practice of Okeite, a traditional ritual recently banned by Anambra State’s Homeland Security Law.
He claims that the arrest is not only illegal, but also indicative of a troubling trend of using state power for political gain.
The lawyer highlights the constitutional violations, citing sections 38, 39, and 40 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, which guarantee religious and free expression.
He emphasises that Nwangwu’s detention, which may be based on an undated video circulating online, is a severe violation of these rights.
Ejiofor questions the arrest’s basis, claiming that even if the video’s content is accurate, no crime was committed.
Ejiofor refutes negative portrayals of Nwangwu, claiming that he is a successful traditional doctor who has consistently discouraged those without legitimate means from seeking his help.
He emphasises Nwangwu’s ethical stance, emphasising his public statements that only those engaged in legitimate trade or business should consult him.
The lawyer also has serious concerns about Anambra State’s Agunechemba Security Outfit, which was established to combat crime.
While initially praising its launch, Ejiofor is now concerned about its potential misuse for political score-settling, especially with the 2025 gubernatorial elections approaching. He warns against the outfit being used for political witch hunts.
Ejiofor concludes by demanding Chief Chidozie Nwangwu’s immediate and unconditional release.
He urges the Anambra State Government to uphold the rule of law and respect the fundamental human rights of its citizens.
He emphasises that the Agunechemba Security Outfit must stay focused on its mission and not be used as a tool of political oppression.
He argues that Nwangwu’s continued detention sets a dangerous precedent for the state’s suppression of religious and expressive freedoms.
