Obi Condemns Arrest Of Human Rights Lawyer Dele Farotimi, Calls For Immediate Release

Abuja, Nigeria – Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned the arrest of human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi, calling it a “gross misuse of police powers” and a threat to democracy in Nigeria.

Obi voiced his condemnation via X (formerly Twitter), demanding Farotimi’s immediate and unconditional release.

Farotimi, a prominent advocate, was arrested on allegations of defamation.

Obi’s statement strongly criticised the use of police force in what he described as a civil matter.

He argued that defamation should be addressed through the courts, not through the weaponization of law enforcement.

“This action is a grave assault on the principles of democracy and justice in Nigeria,” Obi stated.

“As a private citizen, former governor, and even today, I am frequently defamed, insulted, and lied about and against. Yet, I have never resorted to using the Nigerian police or filing reports to silence others,” he wrote.

He urged those who feel defamed to utilise the proper legal channels, rather than resorting to police intervention.

Obi’s statement directly challenges the Nigerian Police Force, calling for a re-evaluation of their role in upholding citizens’ rights.

He asserted that the police’s allegiance should be to the Constitution and the people, not to narrow political interests.
