Abuja, Nigeria – A recent protest organized by the APC Akida Forum, led by Musa Mahmoud, has sparked controversy in Zamfara State, raising questions about political motivations and accountability.

The protest, which saw hired women and youths demonstrating at the DSS headquarters in Abuja, demanded an investigation into Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, amidst allegations linking him to banditry.

While the protest was framed as a response to escalating security concerns in Zamfara, many believe the real motivation is rooted in political rivalry.

Tijjani Ramallan, the leader of the APC Akida Forum, claims that Governor Dauda Lawal has accused Matawalle of collusion with bandits, suggesting these ties have perpetuated the insecurity plaguing the region.

However, a crucial point often overlooked is that Matawalle is no longer the governor of Zamfara. Governor Lawal, as the state’s chief security officer, now bears the primary responsibility for addressing the security crisis.

This raises concerns that the protest is a ploy to deflect blame and undermine Matawalle’s political standing.

The animosity towards Matawalle appears to stem from his successful role as Director General of Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s campaign in the Northwest, which secured significant electoral support for the current president.

This success has allegedly sparked envy amongst political figures, including Ramallan and Mahmoud, who may feel threatened by Matawalle’s rising profile.

Furthermore, investigations by the National Security Adviser’s office have found no evidence to support allegations against Matawalle.

This, coupled with his reportedly professional handling of security matters in the Northwest, led President Tinubu to retain him in his ministerial position.

Adding fuel to the fire, a Kano High Court has issued a restraining order against Governor Lawal, prohibiting him from continuing his smear campaign against Matawalle.

The court recognized the potential harm caused by unfounded allegations and the need for accountability in political discourse.

Despite the court’s ruling, Governor Lawal continues to publicly link Matawalle to banditry and corruption without providing substantial evidence.

These tactics appear to be desperate attempts to undermine Matawalle’s credibility and solidify Lawal’s political standing.

The ongoing campaign against Matawalle raises serious concerns about the integrity of political discourse in Zamfara.

The public needs to remain vigilant against misleading narratives and recognize the potential harm caused by these political maneuvers.

The Kano High Court’s ruling serves as a reminder of the importance of due process and the need for responsible governance.

The focus of accountability in Zamfara should shift towards Governor Lawal, who now holds the responsibility for the state’s security. He must take ownership of the security situation and implement effective strategies to address the rampant insecurity and provide for the well-being of the people of Zamfara.
