Obi Urges Labour NASS Members To Defend Democracy Amidst Political Turmoil
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election and former governor of Anambra State, has issued a strong statement via his X (formerly Twitter) platform, urging Labour Party members of the National Assembly to uphold justice and defend democracy amidst escalating political tensions.
Obi’s statement, addressed to his “dear brothers and sisters” in the National Assembly, acknowledges his previous restraint from interfering in legislative affairs. He explains that this was done out of respect for their independence and to allow them to focus on serving the Nigerian people.
However, he notes that recent developments have compelled him to speak out. Obi cites “26 years of a deteriorating democratic process marked by disregard for educational qualifications for electoral positions, massive rigging, and now the unconstitutional removal of elected officeholders” as key concerns.
He argues that these actions pose a significant threat to Nigerian democracy and the will of the people.
“At this critical juncture,” Obi writes, “I find it necessary to address you. These unconstitutional actions have far-reaching negative implications for our democracy and the will of the people.”
The statement specifically calls upon Labour Party legislators to be “true defenders of justice” and to resist any actions that compromise the integrity of democracy, undermine the interests of the people of Rivers State, or contradict the party’s core values of fairness, equity, and transparency.
The mention of Rivers State suggests Obi is referencing the recent political crisis within the state, likely involving the impeachment or attempted impeachment of elected officials.
“Do not participate in or support any action, decision, or vote that… undermines the interests of the people of Rivers State,” Obi implores, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
He further warns against becoming “instruments of injustice” and contributing to the betrayal of the people’s mandate. He calls on them to prioritize what is right over what is wrong or convenient, emphasizing the need to remain steadfast in defending the well-being of the people of Rivers State.
The statement concludes with a call to action, reinforcing the Labour Party’s message of hope: “Together, let us stand firm in our resolve — because a new Nigeria is possible!”
This statement marks a significant intervention by Obi into the legislative arena, signaling his concern about the direction of Nigerian politics and his commitment to safeguarding democratic principles through his party’s representatives in the National Assembly.
The impact of his plea on the Labour Party’s legislative actions remains to be seen.
