The Ripened Moment: Embracing Patience And Letting Go Of Envy
BY ISAAC ASABOR
In a world driven by the pursuit of success and achievement, it is easy to feel disheartened when we see others reaching milestones we desire for ourselves. Picture two guavas hanging on the same branch of a tree, with one already ripe and the other still green. Although both fruits are exposed to the same sunlight, rain, and nutrients, one ripens faster than the other. Nature offers a valuable lesson through these guavas, reminding us that everyone’s journey to growth and success is uniquely timed. Just because someone has blossomed before us does not mean we are less valuable; it merely shows that our time for ripening has not yet come.
In life, this lesson teaches us the importance of patience and the dangers of envy. Patience means trusting the process and timing of our growth, while envy can lead to frustration and rob us of joy. But by embracing patience, we nurture resilience and optimism, qualities that sustain us even when we feel stuck or sidelined.
Patience is not a passive act. It requires endurance, faith, and an optimistic view of the future. Patience means understanding that delays and setbacks do not define our worth. Each person has a unique path, and the right moment for one person might not be the same for another. In Ecclesiastes 3:1, it says, “To everything, there is a season and a time to every purpose under the heaven.” Just as nature operates in seasons, our lives also unfold in stages that cannot be rushed. Rushing the process might even damage what is to come. Much like green guava that is forced to ripen artificially loses its sweetness, attempting to fast-track success can lead to disappointment and missed growth opportunities.
We may look at others who seem to have what we desire, a successful career, a happy family, or financial stability, and feel that we are behind. But often, these comparisons ignore the unique experiences and challenges that shape each person’s journey. Every flower blooms at its own time and each stage in our lives has its purpose. Rather than rushing or feeling envious, patience allows us to trust in the timing of our journey.
Envy is a destructive emotion, as it blinds us to our potential and shifts our focus from what we can achieve to what others have. When envy takes root, it clouds our perspective, making it difficult to appreciate our achievements and blessings. James 3:16 states, “For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.” This scripture highlights that envy does not just disturb us but also invites negativity into our lives.
People often become envious when they focus on external signs of success, job titles, wealth, or material possessions, rather than on their unique abilities and goals. Comparing ourselves to others takes our energy and attention away from our growth. Just as a green guava cannot rush itself to ripen, our personal and professional growth requires patience and perseverance. When we concentrate on our journey, envy fades, and we begin to recognize the beauty in our growth process.
Patience is an active choice to cultivate resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity. When we are patient, we are not ignoring challenges; rather, we are choosing to move forward with hope and optimism. Patience builds strength and maturity. Each stage of life has something to teach us, and in moments of waiting, we often find clarity about what truly matters to us.
By learning to wait, we also learn to appreciate life’s gifts when they arrive. Much like the taste of guava that has ripened on its own, the rewards we patiently wait for often carry a richer and deeper satisfaction. Psalm 27:14 reminds us, “Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart.” This passage encourages us to lean on our faith and trust that our path will reveal itself in time.
Life’s waiting periods are not devoid of purpose; they are opportunities for reflection, growth, and preparation. Perhaps you’re facing setbacks in your career, family struggles, or financial challenges. Each setback is an opportunity to develop resilience and refine our approach. Rather than seeing delays as failures, we can view them as opportunities to gain perspective.
Consider the story of Joseph from the Bible. Joseph endured years of hardship, betrayal, slavery, and imprisonment, before rising to a position of power in Egypt. Throughout his trials, Joseph held onto his faith and trusted that God had a plan for him. His journey was long and challenging, but his patience ultimately brought him to a position where he could help his family and his nation during a time of famine. Joseph’s story reminds us that patience can transform trials into triumphs when we trust in the process and do not give in to bitterness or envy.
Practicing patience is a choice we make daily. Practical ways to nurture patience and reduce envy cut across an expression of gratitude, mindfulness and self-care, setting personal goals, faith and reflection, and celebrating small victories.
From the perspective of expressing gratitude, focusing on what we have shifts our attention from what we lack to what we are blessed with, and keeping a gratitude journal or taking a few moments each day to reflect on things we appreciate can help us remain positive.
Concerning the demonstration of mindfulness and self-care, engaging in activities that promote relaxation, such as meditation, exercise, or hobbies, can reduce anxiety and improve our mental resilience. By taking care of ourselves, we create a stable foundation for patience and inner peace.
In terms of setting personal goals, focusing on our aspirations rather than comparing ourselves to others gives us a sense of purpose and direction. When we set goals that align with our values and passions, we are more likely to stay patient and less likely to envy others.
From the perspective of faith and reflection, it is germane to opine that in challenging times, leaning on faith can provide strength and reassurance. Verses like Isaiah 40:31, “But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength,” offer encouragement to persevere through the waiting periods.
Also, there is a need to celebrate small victories as progress is not always measured in leaps; sometimes, it is the small steps that matter most. By celebrating small achievements, we remind ourselves that we are moving forward, even if progress seems slow.
Every person has a unique path, and the timeline for reaching personal goals varies. Some may find success early in life, while others may achieve their dreams later. Much like a garden full of diverse plants, each with its distinct growth pattern, our lives bloom in different seasons. While one person’s success might seem like a setback to another, it is merely a reminder that everyone’s journey is distinct. If we fixate on others, we miss out on the joy of our path and the lessons it offers.
Let us choose to see the journey of others as motivation rather than competition. Every person we admire has a waiting period, setbacks, and struggles. When we look beyond the surface, we realize that success is a combination of patience, persistence, and faith. And as we patiently work towards our goals, we should also offer encouragement and celebrate the successes of those around us.
The ripening of guava is a slow, natural process that cannot be rushed without compromising the fruit’s taste. Similarly, our lives follow a unique course that requires patience and trust. The next time you see others reaching milestones that you desire, remember that your journey is valid and that your ripened moment is coming. Stay focused on your path, nurture your growth, and embrace the waiting periods as opportunities to build strength and resilience.
As Galatians 6:9 wisely advises, “And let us not grow weary in doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.” Our harvest will come, and when it does, the fruits of our patience and perseverance will be all the sweeter. Let us replace envy with hope, impatience with faith, and frustration with a steadfast belief that our time will come. The ripened moment awaits each of us; it only requires that we wait with patience and trust in the journey.
