Hensard University VC Announces Groundbreaking South African Patent For Solar-Powered Mobile Device
Hensard University, a thriving private university in Bayelsa State, has announced the successful acquisition of a South African patent for a revolutionary mobile communication device equipped with solar panels and solar control glass.
The announcement, made in a jubilant email to university supporters by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dil, represents a significant advancement in sustainable technology and potentially game-changing innovation for the mobile device industry.
The patent, titled “A MOBILE COMMUNICATION DEVICE INTEGRATED WITH SOLAR PANELS AND SOLAR CONTROL GLASS” and assigned Patent No. 2024/07482, was issued on April 30, 2025.
The innovative design promises to use solar energy to supplement or even replace traditional battery charging methods for mobile devices, potentially reducing reliance on grid electricity and encouraging environmentally friendly mobile usage.
“This is a historic occasion for Hensard University, and it demonstrates the ingenuity and dedication of our research team,” Prof. Dil wrote in his email.
“This patent demonstrates our dedication to creating cutting-edge technologies that solve real-world problems. We believe that this innovation has the potential to transform the mobile device landscape, particularly in areas with limited access to reliable electricity.
The invention, led by a group of innovators including Soumya, Sohit, Shweta, Karishma, and Kalpana, incorporates miniature solar panels onto the device’s surface, capturing sunlight and converting it into electricity.
The use of solar control glass improves the device’s efficiency by optimising light absorption and reducing heat buildup, ensuring peak performance even in harsh sunlight conditions.
Dr. Amelia Nkosi, a leading expert in renewable energy at the University of Cape Town, commented on the development by saying,
“This patent marks a significant step towards a more sustainable future for mobile technology. The integration of solar panels, combined with the use of solar control glass, provides an appealing solution for lowering the carbon footprint associated with mobile device use.
The invention’s practicality will be determined by factors such as solar panel efficiency and overall device design, but the concept is undeniably promising.
The implications of this innovation go far beyond the environmental benefits. In developing countries, where reliable electricity is frequently a barrier to technological adoption, a solar-powered mobile device could be a lifeline for communication, education, and access to critical information.
“The potential for this technology to empower communities in underserved areas is enormous,” said Thandiwe Mbeki, Director of the NGO ‘Tech for All,’ which works to bridge the digital divide in rural South Africa.
“Reliable mobile communication is no longer a luxury, but a necessity. This invention could significantly help to level the playing field and improve people’s lives.”
Prof. Dil Kumar expressed optimism for the future, stating that he hopes the patent will be commercialised soon. “We are currently looking into partnerships with leading mobile device manufacturers and technology companies to bring this innovation to market,” he stated.
“Our goal is to make this technology available to as many people as possible, contributing to a more sustainable and connected world.”
While the specifics of the commercialisation plans remain unknown, the announcement has already sparked significant interest in the technology industry.
Analysts predict that if successfully commercialised, the solar-powered mobile device will cause a significant disruption in the market, potentially setting a new standard for sustainable mobility.
