In honouring the finest in the African film business since 2013, the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards are set to celebrate its tenth year this year. The best African cinema talent will be recognised and celebrated in a magnificent ceremony later this year by Africa Magic in conjunction with Multichoice Nigeria, following an exciting three-day ninth edition in 2023.

For this reason, all African filmmakers are being urged by Africa Magic and Multichoice Nigeria to submit their works for public exhibition or broadcast between December 1, 2022, and December 31, 2023, for consideration in this year’s edition.

January 15, 2024, is the opening date of the entry portal, while February 14, 2024 is the closing date.

If they comply with the requirements, any films—whether they have been shown in theatres or not—as well as television shows, are acceptable.

Talking about the upcoming tenth edition, Dr. Busola Tejumola, Head of Content and Channels West Africa at MultiChoice, stated: “Africa Magic has steadfastly upheld its commitment to spotlighting authentic African stories, especially those that mirror our diverse and rich cultures, over the past ten years.” The Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards are celebrating its tenth anniversary, and to better correspond with international trends and benchmarks, we are taking a bold step by reevaluating our award categories. Redesigning the voting process, removing certain categories, and simplifying others would all be necessary.

In addition to two recognition awards, the Trailblazer and Lifetime Achievement awards, there will be winners in 27 categories in the tenth edition: 16 non-voting and 9 audience-voted categories. The performance awards have been streamlined and will now be awarded for Best Actor or Best Actress in a Leading or Supporting Role. The judges will select the winners instead of the crowd, as was the case with the old voting system.

The public will choose the winners in the remaining eight audience voting categories, while this panel, made up of seasoned filmmakers from all over the continent and chaired by a chief judge, will decide the winners in the sixteen non-voting categories. Deloitte will audit the voting process and confirm the results, as usual.

Best Lead Actor and Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Actress, Best Director, Art Direction, Cinematography, and Costume Design are among the non-voting categories. Additional categories include Best Sound Design, Editing, and Makeup; Best Short Film; Best Documentary; Best Movie and TV Series; and Best Writing in a Movie and TV Series.

Voting is open to the public in several categories, including Best Multichoice Talent Factory Film, Best Indigenous Africa Magic Original, Best Digital Content Creator, Best Indigenous Language (West, East, and Southern Africa), and Best Scripted and Unscripted Africa Magic Original.

The AMVCAs are still dedicated to honouring the extraordinary talent in the African cinema and television industries, the remarkable individuals who work in front of and behind the cameras, and you, our fans who do the work in front and of cameras and you, our viewers who continue to support the hard work of the television and film industry. Thank you for being an integral part of the AMVCA journey.”
