Following the confirmation by the Lagos Police Command on Wednesday, September 20 of the exhumation of the late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, commonly known as Mohbad, new debates have erupted as a result of the discovery of what looked to be fresh blood in the coffin.

Mohbad died in a controversial manner on September 12 and was buried the next day, September 13, prompting justice seekers to demand that the late 27-year-old singer’s body be exhumed for autopsy.

Since videos of the grave site with what looks to be blood in it began to circulate on social media, admirers and worried Nigerians have claimed that Mohbad was buried alive and only died while in the grave.

Medical experts, including the internet’s favourite doctor, Chinonso Egemba, also known as Aproko Doctor, have stated that the discovery of fresh blood in the singer’s casket does not indicate that he was alive at the time of burial.

According to a U.S.-based doctor, Tracey Akins, “blood is a part of the human system and death does not negate that. Blood can stay in the body more than a week after death though livor mortis would have occurred.

“The blood found in Mohbad’s grave could have leaked out of his body after burial through a cut or some other factor, especially because in many cultures, bodies are buried as soon as possible, meaning that the body is not embalmed or preserved, it is returned to nature as is.

“From what I read of Mohbad’s death, he was buried shortly after death, meaning that his body retained all components except breath. So, it is not strange that blood was found in his grave. The time passed is not enough for the body to decompose to the point that blood is absent.”

Aproko Doctor on his part also clarified certain details from a medical angle.  He wrote: “Your blood has a red colour because of a compound called haemoglobin. That’s what carries oxygen through your body.

“This dark colour is because the haemoglobin is being changed to another compound called methemoglobin. Normally, when people die, they die with all the blood in their system, but it doesn’t move because circulation has stopped, but it’s still there. Let’s not forget.

“Now, during embalming, this blood is usually replaced with another fluid. The question is, ‘Was he embalmed?’ Even at that, you can’t get all the blood out! Some will still be left.

“We all want to know why it’s still red, right? There is one possible reason, in a closed compartment, there is very little air underground, so it’s possible that the haemoglobin is not exposed enough to change colour to the darker one.”

He however added, “As to why it’s that much, we don’t have access to the body so we don’t know what other injuries were inflicted on his body, we remember his neck was in an unnatural position to fit in the coffin, it is possible that must have broken his vessels to cause some blood still in the system to leak out.

The police have since reiterated that while the autopsy has been carried out, the result was being awaited.

So far, persons vital to the unravelling of the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death have been arrested, including the nurse who reportedly injected the deceased prior to his demise on Tuesday, September 12.

Meanwhile, Lagos State Police Command has given reasons for dispersing protesters, who on Thursday night converged at the Lekki Toll Gate to protest against the death of popular hip hop star, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

The command insisted that no single live ammunition was fired at the protesters.

According to the image maker in charge of the state police command, Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement Friday said organisers of the protest only got permission for Candle Light Procession at Muri Okunola Park.

The Police further said, “The Lagos State Police Command is fully aware of false narratives making the rounds in relation to the dispersal of crowds at the Lekki Toll Gate on Friday, September 21, 2023.”

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, therefore warned mischief makers that any person or group of persons found disturbing the peace of the state, under whatever guise, would be promptly arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
