NDDC Reaffirms Commitment To Women’s Empowerment In Niger Delta

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has reiterated its unwavering commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment across the Niger Delta.

According to Seledi Thompson-Wakama, Director of Corporate Affairs at NDDC, this reaffirmation occurred during the opening ceremony of a three-day workshop held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, in honour of International Women’s Day.

Speaking on behalf of the NDDC Executive Director of Projects, Sir Victor Antai, the Akwa Ibom State Director, Engr. Evong Evong emphasised the Commission’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and sustainable development initiatives tailored specifically for women in the region.

He praised the women of the Niger Delta for their fortitude and dedication, emphasising that gender equality remains a key component of the NDDC’s sustainable development agenda.

“From the beginning of the NDDC, a dedicated department has ensured that women’s affairs remain central to our mission,” Engr. Evong said.

He also emphasised the Commission’s alignment with the Renewed Hope Initiative, led by the First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s broader national agenda, emphasising a shared commitment to women’s empowerment.

Keynote speaker Mr. Aniekeme Finbar, a business strategist and brand specialist, emphasised the importance of information in empowering women and cultivating leadership.

“An informed woman is an empowered woman,” he declared, encouraging participants to actively seek knowledge, stay involved in regional affairs, and recognise that education and awareness are the foundations of effective advocacy, leadership, and meaningful societal participation.

Mrs. Susan Umoh, a consultant specialising in gender equality and women’s rights, praised the NDDC for consistently supporting women’s initiatives, stating that “women are the backbone of society.”

She urged women to recognise and value their own power and potential.

“Always remember that as women, we are powerful and capable of achieving anything we set our minds to,” Mrs. Umoh stated.

She emphasised the importance of mutual support and ambition among women, advising those involved in crafts to mentor others and serve as watchdogs for their sisters, all in the name of regional growth and development.

The three-day workshop aims to equip participants with the tools and knowledge they need to further empower themselves and contribute to the development of the Niger Delta region.
