Obi Lauds Super Eagles’ ‘True Nigerian Spirit’ Despite Draw In World Cup Qualifier

Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party Presidential candidate Peter Obi praised the Super Eagles’ performance against Zimbabwe in the sixth match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification series.

Obi, who travelled to Uyo, Akwa Ibom state, to watch the game live, expressed his enthusiasm for the team in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) page.

“Our national football team, the Super Eagles, is always entertaining to watch,” Obi wrote. Yesterday, I travelled to Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom state, to cheer on the Super Eagles as they faced the Warriors of Zimbabwe in their sixth match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying tournament.”

Despite the match’s draw, Obi praised the team’s dedication and resilience, emphasising that they exemplified the “true Nigerian spirit.”

“As always, our team demonstrated the true Nigerian spirit of strength, resilience, and dedication on the pitch of play,” he said.

He also emphasised football’s unifying power, particularly in a nation facing challenges of disunity.

“Football, and indeed sports, has remained a strong unifying factor in our nation’s struggle with disunity,” Obi added.

“While we may not have won on the pitch of play, our beloved players have once again won our hearts with their obvious display of sportsmanship.”

Obi expressed gratitude to the Super Eagles and everyone involved in the qualifying process, recognising their efforts and sacrifice.

“I sincerely appreciate our dear national football team, as well as everyone else whose efforts and sacrifices have helped us get this far. “Our efforts were not in vain,” he declared.

He ended his message with his signature slogan, “A New Nigeria and a New Africa are POssible. -PO.”

Obi’s presence at the match, as well as his subsequent message of support, are expected to boost the Super Eagles’ morale as they continue their quest to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria will need to deliver strong performances in their upcoming matches to secure their place in the tournament following the draw.
