Abuja, Nigeria – Former Anambra state governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the ongoing power outages plaguing various parts of Nigeria.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Obi highlighted the devastating impact of the blackouts, particularly in the Northern and Eastern states, as well as the South-South region.
“It is heartbreaking to see that major parts of Northern Nigeria have been experiencing total blackouts for days,” Obi stated.
He emphasised the severe consequences for businesses, especially small-scale enterprises heavily reliant on public power supply.
“This power crisis, coupled with the high cost of fuel and challenging economic conditions, is a recipe for widespread business failure and rising poverty,” he warned.
Obi, known for his advocacy on economic development, maintained that addressing Nigeria’s power crisis is achievable.
He cited the example of Egypt, which has significantly improved its power sector through strategic investments in power stations, achieving sustainable power infrastructure and contributing to a flourishing economy.
“Egypt’s success demonstrates that providing reliable power to citizens is not an insurmountable task,” he asserted.
Obi urged the government to implement immediate and long-term solutions to alleviate the ongoing power crisis.
“With adequate power supply, a New Nigeria is POssible,” he concluded, reiterating his commitment to a brighter future for Nigeria.
Obi’s statement has resonated with many Nigerians facing the hardship of frequent power outages.
The call for urgent action from the government underscores the pressing need for a sustainable solution to this long-standing issue.
