Nigeria bid farewell to one of its most beloved cultural and celebrated music icons, Onyeka Onwenu, fondly known as the “Elegant Stallion,” as she was laid to rest on Friday in Lagos.

Recall that the singer collapsed at the 80th birthday party of Dr. Stella Okoli, founder of Emzor Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Company, on July 30.

She was later confirmed dead at Reddington Hospital in Lagos. She was 72 years old.

A service of songs was held on Friday, August 30, at the Fountain of Life Church, Ilupeju, attended by numerous dignitaries, including former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and the governor of Abia State, Alex Otti. Tributes to the late singer were heartfelt and numerous.

Onwenu was not only a gifted musician with numerous hits but also a broadcaster, actress, politician, and activist. She is survived by her two sons.

The burial ceremony followed immediately at the Ebony Vaults, James George Street, Off Alagbon Close, Ikoyi, Lagos.

Members of Onwenu’s family and friends, and clergymen stood at the gravesite to pay their last respects as the singer’s corpse was lowered into the grave.

Onwenu was not only a gifted musician with numerous hits but also a broadcaster, actress, politician, and activist.

Onwenu’s sons, Abraham and Tijani Ogunlende, expressed their gratitude for the medical efforts to save their mother.

They described her as a “national treasure, an icon, and a legend” whose legacy will have a lasting impression.
