INSECURITY: National Intelligence Agency Chief, Ahmed Abubakar Resigns
Ahmed Abubakar, the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), has resigned.
He tendered his resignation to President Bola Tinubu in Abuja on Saturday, but no clear reasons were given for the decision.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Abubakar in 2018. He was reappointed in December 2021.
In a brief conversation with Abubakar, he stated that he only visited the presidency to brief the President on the country’s security situation and then tendered his resignation.
“It is a routine thing for me to brief the President on current events in the country, and today is no exception. After the briefing today, I tendered my resignation, which Mr. President graciously approved and accepted.
“I thanked him for allowing me to serve Nigeria under his transformational leadership for 15 months, which is extremely rare, by the way, to serve two Presidents on a stretcher at the same time. So I thanked him profusely and promised to remain professional, as we are professionally dedicated to our country and noble causes,” he explained.
When asked for his reasons, he replied, “There are quite a few reasons one will do that, some personal family issues, but nothing very serious, actually, and the friendship will continue.” I spoke with Mr. President, and he understood fully.
His resignation comes at a time when the security situation remains dire, with kidnappings of innocent Nigerians for ransom still commonplace.
