Nigerians Demand Sack of Super Eagles Coach, Finidi George, on the Verge of Failure to Qualify
- Team Lose 2-1 To Benin In World Cup Qualifier, Finidi Responds
The Super Eagles have lost their 2026 World Cup Qualifying Match against the 97th-ranked Benin Republic.
As a result, Nigerians on the social media app X have demanded the immediate dismissal of Finidi George, the country’s National Football Team coach, due to the team’s poor performance.
On Monday, the Super Eagles lost their 2026 World Cup Qualifying Match against Benin Republic, ranked 97th globally.
The Nigerian team lost the match 2-1.
In the four qualification matches played thus far, the team has not won a single match.
Samstar, a commentator, stated, “Finidi George is just a clueless coach with a very big head.” Please fire him immediately and imprison him for stressing all Nigerians. #SoarSuperEagles.”
Another analyst, Buchi Laba, expressed regret for being among those who called for George’s appointment a few months ago.
He wrote, “I pushed hard for Finidi George to get the job. I am an extremely stupid person. Never follow any advice from me.do no get sense?”
Alabi also wrote, “José Peseiro assembled a team from a disparate and inexperienced group of players. He led them to the final, where they were defeated by a single goal. The NFF decided not to renew his contract, and he was let go.
“They hired Finidi George, whose only managerial experience was with Enyimba FC. These people appointed Finidi George and assigned him the task of taking Nigeria to the World Cup.
“The Super Eagles cannot beat Benin, which is ranked 97th. We are not serious as a country. The Super Eagles will miss yet another World Cup. “I am tired.”
Akin Akinwale wrote, “Who recommended Finidi as the Super Eagles coach? I really want to know. This hurts.
“Now we start making calculations to qualify for the World Cup. We could not win our home games, and we still lost to Benin on neutral ground.
“Finidi George, thank you for your services; please resign,” he stated.
Mashood Abiola wrote, “He should simply resign.”He cannot manage the team. In a must-win game, I am not sure why you would bench your most prolific attacker. Second, the defensive line was overly porous. We will have a difficult time qualifying this way. “We have the players, but not the coach.”
However, in the post-match interview, Finidi George, Head coach of the Super Eagles, expressed his disappointment and provided insights into the team’s performance. He acknowledged the team’s initial strong showing but lamented their inability to maintain momentum.
“We started well and controlled the game for the first 30 minutes. Raphael’s goal was a testament to our attacking capabilities, but we failed to capitalize on that lead. The Benin Republic exploited our defensive lapses, and we couldn’t respond effectively,” said George.
When asked about the team’s chances of qualification, George remained cautiously optimistic. “It’s a tough position we find ourselves in, but we still have matches to play. The team needs to regroup and address the issues that have plagued us in these qualifiers. We must learn from our mistakes and come back stronger.”
George also highlighted the need for a more cohesive team effort and better execution of strategies. “Football is a team sport. While individual brilliance can make a difference, it’s the collective effort that wins matches. We need to improve our communication on the pitch and ensure that everyone understands their role.”
