By Chuks Eke
Chief Osita Chidoka, former Corp Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC and one-time Minister of Aviation and his brothers have sponsored a three-day free medical outreach in honour of their late mother, Mrs. Victoria Nneka Chidoka who died of Cancer last month.
The exercise, tagged: “Nneka Chidoka Medical Outreach Program”, ended yesterday shortly after the remains of the late Mrs. Chidoka arrived at Anambra International Charge and Passenger Airport, Umueri, from Abuja, for a wake keep.
The outreach was kick-started on Tuesday at Ozubulu, the paternal hometown of the late Mrs. Chidoka where over 200 persons underwent various medical tests and were given drugs, by a team of medical experts sponsored by the Chidoka brothers.
The outreach with a theme:
“Building a healthy society” and areas of coverage such as free medical care, eye care, blood sugar test, malaria test, physical fitness and cancer awareness lecture also took place on Wednesday and ended yesterday, Thursday as a prelude for late Mrs. Chidoka”s interment.
Speaking to newsmen on the programme, leader of the medical team, Dr. Chinonso Nwosu disclosed that within the three-day programme, no fewer than 600 patients were tested and given drugs, including free eyeglasses for eye patients, adding that the most disease commonly found on patients during the period were High Blood Pressure, BP.
Fielding questions from newsmen at his Obosi country home, Idemili North Local Government Area, Anambra State, Osita Chidoka noted that the essence of the exercise was to prevent more people from dying of cancer as their mother did.
According to Chidoka, “Our family had a partnership with various medical organizations and we shared the medical outreach in Ozubulu and Obosi. We screened 200 women for various ailments. No woman should die of cancer again as our mother did”.
“Something that can be detected early is something that can be treated early. We decided that this burial ceremony is not just a time for people to come and eat and celebrate with us but for us to reach out to society,” he maintained.
The former Aviation boss described his mother as a strong woman who gave birth to five children, four boys and a girl. We will commit whatever that is realized from the burial to the treatment of cancer scourge to support those suffering from the scourge,” Chidoka affirmed.
“Our mother suffered it for 15 years and that early detection and treatment made her to stay this long, even when the medical experts predicted that should die within five years of detection”.
“She has suffered from cancer scourge for the past 15 years. The reason why she stayed long was because of early detection and treatment. We decided to bring it to the open because it is an opportunity to talk about early detection, treatment and preventive method,” he stated.
