NSCDC Condemns Invasion Of Its National Headquarters By Protesters
The high command and management of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have condemned the invasion of the Corps Headquarters on Monday by individuals identified as anti-government protesters.
Speaking about the incident, which involved over 50 protesters at the entrance of the Corps National Headquarters in Abuja on Monday morning, the Corps National Spokesman, Chief Superintendent Afolabi Babawale, described the act as completely unacceptable.
He stated that the protesters chanted various protest songs as they approached the headquarters entrance.
Babawale explained that the NSCDC Commandant General, Prof. Ahmed Audi, had previously issued a red alert to all Corps Commands and Formations, urging them to be vigilant in anticipation of potential protests on October 20th.
This alert was prompted by support for the IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, and emphasized the need for operatives to enhance the security and protection of Critical National Assets and Infrastructure within their respective areas of responsibility.
He stated: “Our respective Formations and Commands have been alerted to increase security measures to protect the nation’s critical infrastructure and prevent any vandalism by hoodlums or unscrupulous elements who might exploit the protests.”
“Intelligence officers, both in plainclothes and uniform, were deployed across the States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, to ensure the security of lives and property, anticipating that some individuals might defy the court ban and participate in the protest.”
He added: “The NSCDC reiterates its commitment to fulfilling its statutory mandate, including safeguarding all Critical National Assets and Infrastructure, Disaster Management, Monitoring and Supervision of Private Guard Companies, and protecting farmers and crops to enhance Food Security, among other responsibilities.”
“However, the NSCDC will not yield to any threats, disruptions of peace, vandalism of government utilities, activities of economic saboteurs in the oil or mining sectors, attacks on its operatives, or destruction of property.”
“The Corps reaffirms that while the public has the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of association, caution and restraint are essential, especially when a court has prohibited such gatherings.”
He appealed to all stakeholders to collaborate with the Corps to ensure the security of the nation’s national assets and infrastructure. He also stated that any suspects apprehended will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
