The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has issued a scathing rebuke of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, accusing him of a “reckless, condescending, and utterly unnecessary outburst” against Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate.

The statement, signed by ADC-FCT Publicity Secretary Chukwudi Samuel, was in response to Wike’s apparent criticism of Obi’s recent comments regarding the dilapidated state of a public primary school in the FCT, which lacked basic amenities such as toilets, chairs, and adequate learning facilities.

“While we understand that leadership requires a thick skin and restraint, Mr. Wike has once again demonstrated that arrogance and noise are not substitutes for vision and decency,” the statement read.

“His statement was not only undignified but also beneath the office he currently occupies.”

The ADC-FCT argued that Obi’s observations should have prompted action rather than irritation.

“Leadership is about service, not ego. If a citizen, no matter who he is, points out decay in governance, a responsible minister fixes it, not fighting it.”

The party further dismissed Wike’s attempts to compare his spending in the FCT to Obi’s tenure in Anambra, calling it “laughable.”

The ADC-FCT statement highlighted Obi’s legacy of leaving billions in reserves, being debt-free, and achieving high educational and health standards, contrasting it with Wike’s “theatre of self-glorification, awarding contracts for the cameras, not for the people.”

The ADC accused Wike of prioritising cosmetic projects over fundamental needs. “You can commission all the roads you like, but if children in Abuja are still learning without toilets, desks, or dignity, then your ‘development’ is hollow.”

The party urged the Minister to “focus on governance, not gossip,” and called on him to be a “builder, not a brawler; a visionary, not a verbal combatant.”

The statement concluded by affirming the ADC’s solidarity with “responsible citizens,” including Peter Obi and Dr. Moses Paul, the ADC Chairmanship Candidate for AMAC, in highlighting the critical need for improved education, dignity, inclusion, and accountability in the FCT.

“Mr. Wike, respect yourself and your office,” the ADC-FCT statement implored. “Leadership is not a shouting match; it is a sacred trust.”
