Hope, Relief As Israel, Hamas Agree On Gaza Peace Plan
Jubilation erupted in Israel and cautious optimism spread globally following the announcement of a groundbreaking agreement between Israel and Hamas, marking the first phase of a long-sought Gaza peace plan.
The deal promises the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners, the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, and the crucial entry of aid into the devastated territory.
News of the agreement sparked immediate celebrations in Israel. In Tel Aviv, Einav Zangauker, mother of hostage Matan Zangauker, was seen overcome with emotion, joyfully jumping on the back of a man wearing a white t-shirt, red cap and yellow sunglasses, exclaiming, “Matan is coming home!”.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed the agreement as “a great day for Israel,” announcing his government would convene on Thursday to formally approve it.
Hamas echoed a sentiment of cautious optimism, stating the negotiations were “responsible and serious” and urging the US and other mediators to ensure Israel adheres to the deal’s implementation.
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas also welcomed the news, expressing hope that the agreement would pave the way for a “permanent political solution… leading to an end to the Israeli occupation of the State of Palestine and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.”
The international community has largely lauded the agreement. UN Secretary General António Guterres described it as a “momentous opportunity,” pledging the UN’s support for its “full implementation,” including increased humanitarian aid delivery and reconstruction efforts in Gaza.
He implored all parties to adhere to the terms, particularly the release of hostages, a permanent ceasefire, and the immediate provision of humanitarian supplies. “The suffering must end,” he emphasized.
Tom Fletcher, UN Under-Secretary General of Humanitarian Affairs, echoed this sentiment on X, writing, “Great news. Let’s get the hostages out and surge aid in – fast.”
US President Donald Trump, in a Truth Social post, proclaimed the agreement a “GREAT Day for the Arab and Muslim World, Israel, all surrounding Nations, and the United States of America.”
He thanked mediators from Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey for their work in facilitating the “Historic and Unprecedented Event.”
World leaders have followed suit with messages of cautious optimism. UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described the deal as a moment of “profound relief that will be felt around the world,” urging all sides to meet their commitments.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called it a “much needed step towards peace” and urged respect for the terms of the plan.
In the United States, House Leader Chuck Schumer expressed the agreement brought a “huge sigh of relief to the hostage families, to all of Israel, and to Palestinians who have suffered for so long in this horrific humanitarian catastrophe.”
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz celebrated the release of the hostages as a “blessing” and thanked US and Israeli leaders.
“I warmly embrace the families of the hostages for the anticipated return of their loved ones, including IDF soldiers and fallen heroes, home soon.”
While celebrating the progress, many acknowledge that significant challenges remain in ensuring the full and lasting implementation of the peace plan.
However, the initial agreement represents a crucial first step towards ending years of conflict and suffering, offering a beacon of hope for a more peaceful future in the region.
