Maguire’s Late Header Stuns Anfield As Man United Break Losing Streak
In a dramatic encounter filled with controversy and late drama, Manchester United secured their first victory at Anfield since January 2016 with a 2-1 win over Liverpool.
Harry Maguire’s powerful header in the 84th minute sealed the three points, inflicting a fourth consecutive defeat on the reigning Premier League champions.
The match started at a frenetic pace, with United taking the lead inside two minutes through Bryan Mbeumo.
However, the goal was immediately controversial, as referee Michael Oliver allowed play to continue despite Alexis Mac Allister lying prone with a head injury after a collision with teammate Virgil van Dijk.
Mbeumo capitalised on the distraction, slotting the ball past Liverpool’s deputising keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who was filling in for the injured Alisson.
United captain Bruno Fernandes missed a golden opportunity to double the lead soon after, shooting wide with only Mamardashvili to beat.
Liverpool, despite their early setback, responded strongly, dominating possession and creating numerous chances.
Cody Gakpo was particularly unlucky, hitting the woodwork three times before finally finding the net in the 78th minute with a close-range finish.
The Dutchman’s goal looked set to rescue a point for Liverpool and end their losing streak, but Maguire had other ideas.
Six minutes after Gakpo’s equaliser, the United defender rose highest to meet a cross and power a header past Mamardashvili, sending the travelling United fans into raptures.
Liverpool, however, were not without their chances to salvage something from the game. In an action-packed second half, United’s new Belgian keeper, Senne Lammens, distinguished himself with a fine save from Alexander Isak.
Gakpo also had a golden opportunity to equalise again in stoppage time, but inexplicably headed wide from close range.
The defeat marks Liverpool’s fourth consecutive loss, a run of form not seen since November 2014 under Brendan Rodgers.
After investing almost £450 million in new players following their dominant Premier League title win last season, Liverpool’s current struggles have left fans deeply concerned.
“What was portrayed as a Liverpool blip now looks like it may be something more,” commented one pundit after the game. The champions’ defensive vulnerability was once again exposed, and despite hitting the woodwork three times, they often looked ponderous and lacking in ideas.
The frustration amongst the home crowd was palpable, with sections of the Anfield faithful voicing their discontent.
For Manchester United, the victory is a significant boost and a welcome return to form, particularly considering it came against their bitter rivals at Anfield.
Maguire’s late intervention will undoubtedly be remembered as a defining moment in this tense and enthralling encounter.
However, for Liverpool, the defeat raises serious questions about their current form and the future direction of the club.
