The Biafra Independence Movement and Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (BIM-MASSOB) have strongly condemned the police summons issued to their leader, Barrister Ralph Uwazuruike, warning that harming him is akin to touching a tiger’s tail, whether it is awake or asleep.

In a press statement issued on Sunday and signed by Mazi Chris Mocha, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity and Director of Information, BIM-MASSOB criticised the recent police invitation for Uwazuruike to report to Tiger Base in Owerri on Monday, October 20, to answer criminal charges related to alleged criminal invasion, forgery, and willful damage.

The pro-Biafra groups insisted that the police action violates democratic principles and norms, as well as Uwazuruike’s fundamental human rights.

They maintained that Uwazuruike, who holds the chieftaincy title of Ijele Ndigbo (the biggest masquerade in Igbo land), has committed no offence by voluntarily participating in a nationwide peaceful protest for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and that this does not warrant the police invitation.

According to the statement, the police summons is a ploy to arrest and possibly detain Uwazuruike without just cause.

BIM-MASSOB described Uwazuruike as a peaceful man who has led a peaceful organisation in Nigeria for the past 26 years.

They stated that he has consistently demonstrated a penchant for peaceful dialogue and respect for the rule of law while advocating for Biafran self-determination.

The group further insisted that there is no justification for inviting him to report to Tiger Base in Owerri for questioning.

It is worth recalling that Uwazuruike recently filed a suit at the Owerri High Court against the Imo State Police Command and seven others to enforce his fundamental human rights.

In the suit filed at the High Court Registry in Owerri, Uwazuruike is seeking a court order mandating the police to pay him N100 million in damages for infringing on his fundamental human rights.

He is also requesting the court to restrain the respondents from arresting and detaining him regarding his planned participation in the pro-Kanu nationwide peaceful protest scheduled for October 20.
