Jones Relishes Title Triumph But Urges Liverpool To Finish Strong
Curtis Jones has expressed his delight in Liverpool’s Premier League title victory, which came in emphatic fashion with a 5-1 demolition of Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield last weekend.
The victory, which saw the Reds lift their record-tying 20th top-flight trophy with four games remaining, sparked scenes of joy among players, staff, and supporters at the stadium and at the AXA Training Centre.
When the squad returned to training this week, they were greeted with celebratory decorations, demonstrating the magnitude of their achievement.
Despite the celebrations, midfielder Curtis Jones insists that Liverpool cannot afford to rest on their laurels. He is urging his teammates to keep their momentum going and finish the season strong, beginning with Sunday’s crucial away game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge (4.30pm BST kickoff).
“It is mixed emotions,” Jones told Liverpoolfc.com, reflecting on the emotional roller coaster of the last few days. “I have a few.” Obviously, I am excited and proud, but I have also been chilled. It is one of those things. Even though we won, we still have games to play. It is great that there are still more games available because I definitely want to play more. At the same time, it is unfortunate that the parties can not be bigger yet!”
Jones revealed that the entire team and staff had the opportunity to relive the title-winning journey together, thanks to a special viewing organised by the manager and staff. This session included clips from crucial games, pivotal goals, and memorable moments from the entire season. “The second part was the celebrations on the pitch, and looking back, you miss what certain lads are doing, dancing, and interacting with the ball-boys and fans, among other things. There are certain things that you all miss, so seeing it all again was a joy,” Jones said.
When asked if the atmosphere at Anfield last Sunday surpassed his first appearance for Liverpool, Jones did not hesitate. “In terms of atmosphere and overall experience, I believe that was the best game I have ever attended. It all started when we arrived on the bus [prior to the match] and could not see! There are who knows how many fans outside, 60,000 inside, and so on. The entire game was just ridiculous. It is unfortunate that Tottenham scored first, and that is probably the only thing we regret because it probably softened the blow. But as soon as we scored and Macca [Alexis Mac Allister] scored his goal, the crowd erupted and went crazy.”
He described the game’s final moments as an emotional rollercoaster. “Then it went on, and at the end of the game, when I had my shot, I looked and saw that there were only a few seconds left before the whistle blew. That is what the game is all about. There are fans, families, and so on, and everyone is an emotional wreck, whether they are crying or screaming and shouting with excitement. We do not know what to do either! We are jumping around like children. “What an unbelievable day!”
Hearing the Kop sing his name was one of Jones’ favourite parts of the celebrations. He admitted to having fantasised about such a moment, especially given the difficulties he has faced in securing a consistent starting spot. “I have probably been one of those who has been unfortunate enough to be moved in and out of the team for various reasons. Arne Slot is the man, and he gets to pick his team, which I respect. I do not always agree, and that is just me, but I have always put the team first. I have always assumed that whether I start or not, I will come off the bench, and if I do start, I will score and assist. If I did not start games, I would never sulk or complain because at the end of the year, this is what it is all about.”
He also emphasised his commitment to team unity, saying, “I do not want to be the one who does not start a game and is sulking inside the changing rooms when the lads have to go play. Or if I have just won a game but have not played as much as I would like, I am inside and upset.
“I am, but I will keep that to myself and talk to him about it. But hearing them sing my name and praise me for what I have done brought a huge smile to my face and made me so proud.”
Jones emphasised the importance of staying focused ahead of the remaining fixtures, which include a home game against Arsenal and an upcoming clash with Chelsea.
“I believe that is also an important consideration. There are four games left. I know the league is won, and he will rotate players, give them game time, and all that.
“I feel it is important, and I know it is, that the lads are prepared to know that we do not want to go from an incredible season to losing our last four games. Of course, these are big games against tough teams.”
He continued, “I do not think it is games where we go in there light and say, ‘Oh, I have already won the league, we are just going to have this as a training game.’” No, we are going there because we want to win.
“We are playing against these teams, and we want to win. As I previously stated, we may make minor changes to the team, but this simply demonstrates the strength of our squad. We have players who can join the team and still win games.
Finally, Jones expressed his desire to end the season by setting new records, both individually and collectively. “I believe that is important as a player. I do not believe there is ever a time when you think, ‘Oh yeah, I have done everything and can now stop.’
If there are any records that we can break, either individually or as a team. If it is an individual, we will assist him as a team; if it is as a group, we will go and try.”
Liverpool fans will be hoping that Jones’ determined attitude and commitment to excellence will drive the team to a strong finish, cementing their legacy as Premier League champions.
The game against Chelsea on Sunday will be a true test of their resolve, as well as an opportunity to show off their squad’s depth and quality.
