US Pledges Continued Support For Nigeria’s War On Drugs

The United States has reaffirmed its support for Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and substance abuse.

The Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL), a division of the US State Department, promised continued assistance after visiting the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) headquarters in Abuja on Monday.

Ms. Candace Spradley, Director of INL in Nigeria, led a delegation that included Ms. Ada Aki and praised the NDLEA’s recent operational successes under the leadership of Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd).

She emphasised the US government’s commitment to the fight against narcotics, particularly opioids, and expressed a desire to strengthen the current partnership between the NDLEA and INL.

“Our visit is to emphasise the importance of our collaboration and to assure you that we are prepared to support your efforts,” Ms. Spradley stated. “If you require any assistance, we will be happy to help you.”

Brig. Gen. Marwa welcomed the pledge of support, highlighting President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to combating drug abuse and illicit trafficking. He also recognised the previous administration’s interest in combating the global drug problem.

Marwa thanked the INL for its ongoing assistance, which he credited with helping to establish the NDLEA as Africa’s leading anti-narcotics agency.

He emphasised the importance of continuing international collaboration in order to maintain the agency’s current momentum and build on its successes.

He identified specific areas where additional support from the United States and other international partners would be critical. This includes:

  • Operational vehicles
  • Forensic Laboratory Equipment
  • Training for forensic analysts.
  • Training and capabilities for cyberspace and crypto investigation
  • Drug testing kits for field operations.

The US’s reaffirmed commitment signals continued cooperation in Nigeria’s fight against drug trafficking and substance abuse, recognising the NDLEA’s critical role in combating this global issue.
