Rivers State Infrastructure Booming As Key Road, Bridge Projects Surge Forward
Infrastructure development is rapidly transforming Rivers State, with key road and bridge projects gaining significant momentum.
These advancements are poised to revolutionise access and mobility for communities across the region, unlocking new economic opportunities and improving the quality of life for residents.
At the forefront of this transformative wave is Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, the construction giant whose work is reshaping transportation corridors and fostering business potential throughout the state.
From the ambitious Port Harcourt Ring Road to the Emohua-Abalama/Tema Junction Road and the Ahoada-Omoku-Ndoni Road, progress is evident.
The 15.24 km dualisation of the Emohua-Abalama/Tema Junction Road, located near Port Harcourt, is already showing tangible results. Phase 1 is complete, and Phase 2 commenced in November 2024, demonstrating a commitment to progress despite security challenges in the area.
According to Project Manager Finn Drosdowski, the project, which includes drainage works and solar-powered street lighting, is expected to significantly improve travel times and safety for road users.
Work is also advancing rapidly on the Ahoada-Omoku-Ndoni Road Extension. The dualization of the 25.4km Ahoada-Omoku Road, linking Ogbo Okudu Road Junction in Ahoada East to Omoku in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area, is nearing 75% completion.
Drainage systems are currently being installed in township areas. As part of the project, some residents have been relocated with compensation provided for affected properties.
Julius Berger has also commenced reconstruction of the crucial 19.6km Buguma-Abalama-Tema-Degema-Abonnema Road, connecting several riverine communities. The project, which officially started in December 2024, includes drainage works and the rehabilitation of seven bridges.
Engineers on-site confirm that pre-construction surveys guided the decision to partially reuse milled road material as a sub-base to improve sustainability.
The project also aims to provide local employment opportunities, engage community suppliers, and ensure workforce training aligns with modern construction standards.
The centerpiece of the infrastructure boom remains the 50.15km Port Harcourt Ring Road, awarded in 2023. This dual carriageway, designed to connect six Local Government Areas (Port Harcourt, Obio Akpor, Ikwerre, Etche, Eleme, and Oyigbo), is one of the most significant infrastructure developments in Rivers State.
The project includes five flyovers and a river-crossing bridge, promising to dramatically improve intra-city movement.
At the Ozuoba Flyover, work has begun on the connecting road to the Rumumasi Flyover, while commercial activity continues in the area. Traders and transport operators in Rumumasi are adapting to ongoing construction and shifting traffic routes.
The roads linking Rumumasi to Aluu Flyover, as well as Aluu to Kala Flyover and Kala to Elelenwo Flyover, are nearing completion.
Final drainage works are in progress near Kala Flyover, while crews on the East-West Road axis are installing U-shaped drainage channels and road dividers, marking the final steps in preparing the road for use.
The terminal point of the Ring Road project is bustling with activity as Julius Berger workers install U-channels and median works.
Residents’ relocation and compensation have been a part of the project process, with efforts made to address these requirements. In line with its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policies, Julius Berger has constructed and maintained temporary access roads while continuing to provide employment opportunities for locals. The company’s Young Engineers Program also remains active, training future professionals.
Julius Berger reaffirms its commitment to delivering the critical Ring Road Project on schedule, promising a brighter future for transportation and economic development in Rivers State.
