Twelve people detained in Ebonyi State on charges of treasonable felony related to Biafran agitation have been released and acquitted, marking a significant development after years of legal battles. The accused were among 36 agitators who were arrested and remanded in prison on May 24, 2021.

The release occurred on Thursday, April 10, 2025, after the Ebonyi State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) acknowledged repeated judicial pronouncements and voluntarily withdrew the charges against the accused, citing a lack of evidence and complying with previous court orders acquitting them.

The case has received widespread attention, highlighting tensions in Nigeria over Biafran separatism.

Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor Esq. KSC, lead counsel for the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPoB), praised the release as a victory for the rule of law and a vindication of his clients’ innocence.

“History was made today, April 10, 2025, when freedom long denied was finally restored,” Ejiofor stated.

He confirmed that he personally oversaw the release of the inmates from prison authorities in accordance with the court’s order.

“Our legal team remains steadfast and fully committed to securing the freedom of the remaining detainees – men who have also been discharged and acquitted by no less than four different High Courts in Ebonyi State,” he stated.

“It is no longer a question of if but when they will be released, and that day is approaching. Justice may be delayed, but it will certainly not be denied. “Freedom must finally prevail.”
