Amaechi’s Legacy: From Model Schools To Federal Universities, A Decade Of Impact
Port Harcourt, Rivers State – Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi, former Rivers State Governor and Minister of Transportation, left an enduring legacy that continues to benefit Nigeria a decade later.
This is demonstrated by the recent establishment of a Federal University of Environment in Ogoni land and the ongoing operations of the Federal University of Transportation in Daura, Katsina State.
According to APC chieftain Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, the new University of Environment, which is located in a model secondary school built during Amaechi’s governorship, demonstrates his commitment to education.
Eze emphasised that the project backs up former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s and Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka’s claims that Amaechi’s model secondary schools are superior in quality and equipment to many Nigerian universities from 2013.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu hailed the establishment of the University of Environment in Ogoni land, a region suffering from the effects of environmental degradation, as a step towards environmental justice and sustainable development.
The President emphasised that the university will serve as a centre of excellence, preparing students to face environmental challenges.
Meanwhile, the Federal University of Transportation in Daura, established during Amaechi’s tenure as Minister of Transportation, already employs thousands of Nigerians.
This, combined with the recent award presented to Amaechi by Rivers State University for establishing the College of Medical Sciences, highlights his significant contribution to education and infrastructure development.
Chief Eze praised Amaechi’s visionary leadership, saying he prioritised long-term development over short-term political gains.
He contrasted Amaechi’s approach with that of other former governors, emphasising how Amaechi’s projects have and will continue to benefit future generations.
The opening of the University of Environment has already sparked recruitment efforts, with dozens of advertised positions in engineering, transportation management, and maritime-related fields, indicating a significant increase in job opportunities in the region.
The impact of Amaechi’s legacy extends beyond Rivers State. His contributions to national development, particularly in transport and education, are visible in projects that continue to generate jobs and opportunities throughout Nigeria.
His story exemplifies how visionary leadership can influence a country’s future, Chief Eze concluded.
