Fire Service Boss Demands Action After Deadly Niger State Fuel Tanker Explosion

Abuja, Nigeria – Following a devastating fuel tanker explosion in Niger State that killed over 60 people and injured many more, Engr. Abdulganiyu Jaji, Controller-General of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), issued a strong call to action.

He is calling for immediate improvements in driver behaviour and safety protocols in the fuel transportation industry.

The explosion has highlighted the critical need for national safety reform, Jaji stated in a press briefing.

He specifically targeted fuel station owners and tanker operators, urging them to address their employees’ reckless driving habits, particularly on major roads and sharp bends.

“Even a small static spark or petrol leak can cause a rapid, fatal explosion,” Jaji warned, emphasising the inherent dangers of fuel transportation and handling.

He specifically condemned the hazardous practice of scooping fuel from spilt tankers, emphasising the high risk of ignition from fuel vapours and leaks.

“Your life is worth more than a few litres of fuel,” he declared, urging people to avoid accident sites and instead call the FFS for help.

Jaji extended his condolences to the victims’ families and praised the first responders for their efforts.

He also advocated for stricter adherence to safety measures across the board, specifically targeting fuel stations, gas refilling plants, and domestic gas cylinder users.

The Controller-General’s statement also emphasised the need for a modernised legal framework to address current fire safety concerns.

He advocated for the accelerated passage of the revised Fire Service Act of 1963, which is currently before the National Assembly, claiming that the outdated law is insufficient to effectively regulate fire safety.

He emphasised the importance of prioritising safety and raising public awareness to prevent future tragedies, concluding,
