Abuja, Nigeria – The Kulen Allah Cattle Rearers Association of Nigeria (KACRAN) has urged the National Assembly to significantly increase funding for the newly established Ministry of Livestock Development in the 2025 budget.

The association contends that adequate funding is critical for combating escalating insecurity and promoting peace and economic growth in the country.

KACRAN issued the appeal as various government agencies presented budget proposals to the National Assembly.

In a statement released on Friday, the association emphasised the ministry’s ability to resolve herder-farmer conflicts, improve food security, and create millions of jobs.

The association expressed confidence in the ministry’s leadership, commending the appointment of Honourable Alhaji Idi Muktar as Minister, Dr. Chinyere Ijeoma Akujobi as Permanent Secretary, and Mrs. Winnie Lai Solarin as Director of Animal Husbandry Services.

They believe that this team’s expertise will be useful in implementing effective government policies.

KACRAN emphasised the importance of assisting the often-overlooked communities in remote areas who will directly benefit from the ministry’s initiatives.

They cited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s support for the livestock sector as a strong indication of the ministry’s importance.

However, the association cautioned that insufficient funding could severely impede the ministry’s ability to function effectively, undermining its potential to contribute to the national economy.

They emphasised the livestock sector’s critical role in generating revenue and providing essential food products to the Nigerian population.

“We urge members of the National Assembly to consider increasing or tripling the proposed budget for this ministry,” the statement read.

“Such action will pave the way for increased agricultural production, job creation, economic growth, conflict resolution among herders and farmers, and the establishment of long-term peace in Nigeria.”
