The Nigerian government has voiced deep concern over the escalating post-election violence in Mozambique, following the confirmation of Daniel Chapo of the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) as the presidential winner.

The crisis, primarily concentrated in Maputo, Beira, and Nampula, has reportedly claimed the lives of over 121 people and left more than 380 injured.

Violent protests erupted after the Constitutional Council declared Chapo the victor with 65% of the vote.

The results have been rejected by the leader of the opposition party, fueling the unrest.

In a statement released Friday by the acting spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Federal Government of Nigeria called for immediate de-escalation.

The statement urged all aggrieved parties to utilize legal channels to address their concerns rather than resorting to violence.
