APC Chieftain Slams INEC Chairman For Praising Ghana’s Elections, Calls Him ‘Enemy Of Democracy’
LAGOS, NIGERIA –– Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former National Publicity Secretary of the defunct New People’s Democratic Party (nPDP), has launched a scathing attack on Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, for praising the recently concluded Ghanaian general election.
Eze described Yakubu’s comments as “the height of arrant hypocrisy, self-serving, and idiotic,” accusing him of being a major threat to the development of Nigeria’s democracy.
Yakubu attributed the success of the Ghanaian election to the country’s political stability and consistent party structures.
However, Eze vehemently disagreed, arguing that Yakubu’s praise is a blatant display of hypocrisy given the widely criticized conduct of Nigeria’s 2023 general elections under his leadership.
Eze stated that the majority of elections conducted under Yakubu’s tenure have fallen far short of democratic standards, alleging that INEC has become an extension of the ruling government, suppressing opposition parties and silencing dissenting voices.
He condemned Yakubu’s claim that Ghana’s electoral body learned from Nigeria, calling it a “false and misleading mockery” of Ghana’s electoral integrity.
“For a man who, through his ineptitude and bias, has ruined Nigeria’s democratic process by conducting fraudulent elections, to hail Ghana’s electoral process is sheer insensitivity and morally debasing,” Eze declared in a press statement.
He cited the failure to fully utilize the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the IReV portal as key examples of Yakubu’s alleged mismanagement, leading to widespread distrust in the electoral process.
Eze further accused Yakubu of deliberately creating a system that disenfranchises Nigerians and allows for the manipulation of election results.
He argued that this has led to widespread disenchantment, mistrust, and ultimately, bad governance.
The APC chieftain called for urgent intervention, urging the National Assembly to mandate INEC to publicly release its election plans a year in advance, allowing for scrutiny and potential legal challenges to ensure greater transparency and credibility in future elections.
He warned that without significant reforms, the 2027 elections will be a repeat of the 2023 debacle.
Eze concluded by praising Ghana’s electoral umpire for its transparency and urging the international community to intervene and save Nigeria from the “imminent doom” posed by Yakubu’s continued leadership of INEC.
He called Yakubu “Nigeria’s uno numero enemy of democracy.”
