Zulum Hands Over Remodelled Federal College Of Education To Federal Ministry

Maiduguri, Borno State – Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, has officially handed over a newly remodelled Federal College of Education in Gwoza Local Government Area to the Federal Ministry of Education.

The institution, formerly the Teachers College Gwoza, underwent a significant upgrade by the state government before the handover ceremony held Wednesday at the Government House in Maiduguri.

The upgraded facility boasts over 100 classrooms, modern laboratories, improved administrative offices, and staff quarters for principal officers.

Governor Zulum also provided a N200 million take-off grant to support the college’s operations.

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Zulum reiterated his commitment to the college’s success, emphasizing the importance of quality education.

He stressed the need to produce graduates equipped with skills to contribute meaningfully to society, urging the college management to prioritise quality over quantity.

He specifically discouraged the immediate introduction of solely local language courses, advocating instead for subjects like English, Mathematics, Sciences, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to empower students economically.

The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. Nasir Sani Gwarzo, represented by Dr. Ejeh Usman, Director of Polytechnic, Education and Allied Institutions, commended Governor Zulum for the generous donation of the fully remodelled college site and the substantial take-off grant.

He described the governor’s actions as a testament to his commitment to education in the region.

The handover ceremony was attended by a high-level delegation from the Federal Ministry of Education, including the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Colleges of Education, Prof. Paulinus Okwelle, and the Chairman of the College’s Governing Council, Professor Sule Tagi.

The establishment of the Federal College of Education in Gwoza marks a significant development for Borno State, which previously lacked a federal institution of this kind.
