Osimhen’s Late Header Rescues Super Eagles In Benin Draw, Secures Group D Top Spot
Abidjan, Ivory Coast – Victor Osimhen emerged as Nigeria’s hero once again, rescuing a point for the Super Eagles with a late header that salvaged a 1-1 draw against Benin Republic in their final Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifier on Tuesday.
The dramatic finish saw Nigeria secure the top spot in Group D, despite a nervy performance that saw them concede an early goal.
Mohamed Tijani put Benin Republic in front in the first half, leaving the Super Eagles needing a response.
Despite dominating possession and creating several chances, Nigeria struggled to find a way past a stubborn Benin defence.
Osimhen, in particular, missed a gilt-edged opportunity early on, a missed chance that seemed to haunt the Super Eagles for the majority of the match.
However, with time running out, Osimhen redeemed himself. He rose highest to meet a pinpoint cross from Moses Simon in the 81st minute, directing a powerful header past the Benin goalkeeper to secure a vital point.
The draw was enough for Nigeria to secure first place in Group D, joining Rwanda as the qualifiers from the group for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
While the Super Eagles had already secured their qualification following Libya’s 1-0 victory over Rwanda, their performance against Benin raised concerns about their form ahead of the continental tournament.
Despite the lacklustre display, Osimhen’s heroic moment ensured that the Super Eagles left Abidjan with the top spot in the group.
Caretaker Coach, Augustine Eguavoen will have plenty of work to do to improve his team’s overall performance, but with a goal scorer like Osimhen in their ranks, Nigeria will remain a force to be reckoned with at AFCON 2025.
