Human rights activist, Comrade Donald Nwaneri has called on the Imo State government to immediately intervene and bring to an end the perceived incessant harassment, extortion, intimidation, and persecution of Imo State residents by security operatives in the state.

Nwaneri who made the call in Owerri weekend during a chat with newsmen, unequivocally demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Comrade Chinonso Uba (alias Nonsonkwa), an Owerri-based on-air radio broadcaster cum frontline rights defender being held for alleged treason, among other charges.

The activist frowned at the Gestapo way such a notable social crusader was reportedly abducted and treated like a common criminal by men of the Imo State Police Command and arraigned based on a petition by a supposed faceless person.

He maintained that the recent unlawful mode of arrest of Nonsonkwa quickly brings to mind similar abductions as in the case of one Eziefula Opara in March 2022, as well as several others, especially in the dark days of the defunct SARS.

“I humbly consider it expedient to appeal to the relevant authorities to release Chinonso Uba without any further delay. It’s not a crime to speak out against perceived ills in society. I also plead for the release of other hapless Imolites languishing in police custody for no known offence, except that they are armless civilians.
