Bayelsa Government Celebrates Wrestling Success At 3rd Gov Diri Classics

Yenagoa, Bayelsa State – The third edition of the Governor’s National Wrestling Classics, named after Governor Douye Diri, officially kicked off in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, with the government expressing pride in the state’s dominance in the sport.

Governor Diri, represented by his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhurdjakpo, highlighted the rich history of wrestling in Bayelsa, dating back to its days as part of Rivers State.

He cited prominent Bayelsan wrestlers like Jackson Bidei, Victor Kodei, Macauley Appah, and Irigha Eferebo, who brought global recognition to the region.

The Governor emphasised the government’s commitment to utilizing sports as a tool for crime prevention and youth development.

Dr. Daniel Igali, President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation and Commissioner for Sports Development, commended the Bayelsa State government for its consistent support of the sport, making the Classics one of the longest-running competitions in the nation.

He attributed the federation’s significant achievements to the government’s dedication.

Day two of the championship witnessed intense competition with athletes from various states vying for medals.

Christian Ogwusoya of Ondo State secured gold in the women’s 53kg, while Adijah Idris of Rivers triumphed in the 55kg category. In the men’s 97kg, Godday Eseimokumoh of Bayelsa emerged victorious.

The championship continues with exciting matches in the Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling categories.

The event is expected to culminate on Saturday, with the announcement of the overall champions.
