Zulum Advocates For Chinese Model Of Leadership Selection In Nigeria
Abuja, Nigeria: Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, has sparked debate after suggesting Nigeria adopt the Chinese model for selecting leaders.
In a speech delivered at the 24th National Conference of the Nigerian Institution of Agricultural Engineers, Governor Zulum emphasised the need for a more structured and merit-based approach to electing leaders at all levels.
He specifically praised the Chinese system, which he describes as a “selection versus election” process.
This system, according to Zulum, involves identifying credible leaders with proven integrity based on their track record.
These individuals are then evaluated for their potential, leading to the selection of the most qualified candidate.
Only then are they presented to the public for formal election.
“I strongly believe there will be no meaningful achievements without good leadership,” Zulum stated.
However, he also stressed the importance of good followership, arguing that both elements are essential for effective governance.
While Zulum’s suggestion is likely to be met with mixed reactions, it highlights a growing concern within Nigeria regarding the current political system.
The governor’s emphasis on merit and proven track records reflects a desire for more accountable and effective leadership.
The speech also touched on the importance of technological advancements in transforming agricultural practices in Nigeria.
Zulum advocated for the use of artificial intelligence and biotechnology to enhance food production and ensure sustainability, particularly in light of a rapidly growing population.
The governor’s visit to the conference, alongside prominent figures from the Borno State government, underlines the importance placed on agricultural development and finding innovative solutions to address the challenges facing the nation.
