Port Harcourt, Rivers State – Following the peaceful conduct of the October 5th Local Government elections, Rivers State has descended into chaos with widespread violence and destruction of council secretariats blamed on supporters of the FCT Minister,  Nyesom Wike.

APC chieftain, Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, in a strongly worded press release, condemned the acts of violence and called for swift action against Wike and his loyalists.

Eze expressed concern over the “politically sponsored carnage” and decried the “spilling of innocent bloods” and the “wanton destruction” of local government secretariats.

He praised the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) for conducting “one of the best council elections in the country,” emphasizing that the real issue at stake is the need to rein in the excesses of Wike and his “rampaging wounded lions.”

While commending President Bola Tinubu for acknowledging the crisis in Rivers State, Eze sharply criticized the President’s failure to directly address Wike and his supporters.

Eze found it “unacceptable” that Tinubu called for restraint from Governor Siminalaye Fubara without directly calling out Wike, whom everyone knows is behind the “heinous acts” in the state.

He labeled Tinubu’s inaction as “saddening, mischievous and unfortunate.”

Eze also condemned the audacity of Wike’s supporters, who openly claim responsibility for the attacks and refuse to allow the elected Council Chairmen to assume office.

While acknowledging President Tinubu’s concern over the violence, Eze criticized the lack of a strong directive to the Inspector General of Police to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators.

He condemned the “brazen display of arrogance, cowardice, insanity, and acts of terrorism” by the pro-Wike supporters, who are “wallowing in the murky waters of disbelief” over their losses in the elections.

Eze also called on Wike to emulate other prominent figures who maintain peaceful relationships with their home governors, including the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, the Secretary to Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, Vice President Kashim Shettima, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, Rt. Hon.  Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, Kwankwaso, Dr. Gregory Peter Obi and President Bola Tinubu.

Eze called on the IGP to apologise for the withdrawal of police from the Local Government secretariats and subsequent burning of some secretariats, raising questions about the timing and effectiveness of security intelligence gathering.

He demanded the arrest and punishment of the perpetrators, warning that failure to do so would be viewed as playing games with the security of Rivers State.
