Chimamanda Adichie, a celebrated and award-winning novelist, will be the keynote speaker at the 2024 School of Politics, Policy, and Governance (SPPG) Graduation Ceremony, which will take place on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at the Shehu Musa Yar’adua Centre in Abuja.

The event, themed People, Politics, Policies, and the Power of Words, will also feature Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili, two-time Minister of the Federal Republic and founder of SPPG; Ms. Alero Ayida-Otobo, Chief Executive Officer of SPPG; and Dr. Abiola Akiyode, Dean of SPPG, addressing the graduands who are poised to become transformative leaders in Nigeria and beyond.

Alero Ayida-Otobo, CEO of SPPG, told Tribune Online in Abuja that the School aims to disrupt the cycle of poor governance by training a new generation of ethical and effective leaders through its innovative curriculum.

She went on to say that the time has come for Africa to take the bull by the horns, challenge the status quo, and bring on board a large number of people with character and competence to redirect the African course.

“As long as Africa continues on the path of very poor politics, a political culture that prioritises personal, private, or narrow interests over the common good, it will have no chance of economic development.

This event demonstrates SPPG’s dedication to developing a new generation of leaders committed to improving governance in Nigeria and Africa. As Nigeria faces ongoing governance challenges, the importance of preparing leaders with character, competence, and the capacity to serve the people cannot be overstated.

“So, if Africans need to transform their politics and we simply sit back as citizens hoping that those who have entrenched poor governance as a matter of political culture will one day have a Damascus experience, we will wait indefinitely.”

“We have demonstrated that people with character, competence, and capacity will enter Africa’s politics in large numbers.

“This will call into question the current monopoly of poor politicians providing poor governance.

“The graduation theme, “People, Politics, Policies, and the Power of Words,” reflects SPPG’s mission to prioritise citizen engagement and foster a governance model based on people’s needs.
