Today, as Nigeria commemorates its 64th year of independence, the mood is far from celebratory.

According to Mr Vatlismary Unachukwu, a political analyst, a deep sense of sobriety pervades the nation, in stark contrast to the usual celebratory spirit.

He stated that, while the national anthem will be sung and flags raised, the reality on the ground is one of hardship and despair. Poverty, insecurity, unemployment, and corruption continue to plague the country’s citizens, raising questions about the true meaning of independence.

“It is difficult to celebrate when basic necessities are scarce and the future appears uncertain. The leadership, seemingly unmoved by its people’s suffering, continues to promote a narrative of progress that contrasts sharply with the lived experiences of millions of Nigerians.

“The current situation raises the question of whether we are truly governed by humans, or by beings devoid of empathy and compassion. The constant lies and flagrant disregard for the truth only serve to erode the delicate fabric of democracy.

“We, the people, are complicit in the downward spiral. Our silence, willingness to appease the powers that be, and failure to demand accountability have all contributed to this malaise, according to Unachukwu, a social commentator.

Looking ahead, he says the future looks bleak.  “Can a country plagued by such profound challenges truly achieve a brighter future? Can we, as a people, break free from the shackles of apathy and corruption and forge a path to a more just and equitable society?

“This Independence Day, let us not be swayed by hollow declarations. Instead, let us engage in introspection, demand accountability, and hold our leaders to the highest standards.

“True independence lies not in empty celebrations, but in a shared commitment to truth, justice, and a better Nigeria.”
