ActionAid Nigeria Slams Tinubu’s Independence Day Speech As ‘Echoes Of Past Unfulfilled Promises’
Abuja, Nigeria – ActionAid Nigeria has sharply criticised President Bola Tinubu’s Independence Day speech, describing it as a collection of “echoes of past promises and reforms that remain unfulfilled.”
The NGO contends that, despite the administration’s claims of economic progress, the reality on the ground is a worsening crisis for millions of Nigerians unable to afford necessities.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, ActionAid Nigeria Country Director Andrew Mamedu emphasised the dire consequences of the government’s recent policies:
Fuel subsidy removal: The elimination of fuel subsidies in May 2024 resulted in a sharp increase in fuel prices, making transportation, food production, and energy costs unbearable for ordinary citizens.
Cost of living crisis: Rising electricity, inflation, and food prices have pushed many Nigerians further into poverty, while unemployment remains high.
Unchecked insecurity: The statement criticises the President for remaining silent on the ongoing violence in the Northwest, where bandits continue to terrorise communities, displacing families and destroying livelihoods.
Mamedu also lamented the President’s repeated calls for “sacrifice” from Nigerians.
He said, “How long must this sacrifice last? Citizens are already bearing the brunt of devastating economic policies, with no end in sight.
He also questioned the government’s commitment to combating corruption, citing a lack of specific steps to address this systemic issue.
The NGO accuses the President of reforms mirroring the destructive policies of previous regimes, resulting in increased poverty and inequality.
“The alleged ‘achievements’ have not yet resulted in tangible improvements in the lives of Nigerians,” Mamedu insisted.
The statement concludes by urging the government to listen to the people’s voices and implement reforms that address the basic needs of ordinary Nigerians.
“Nigerians demand more than promises. We need tangible changes that will lead to affordable and improved living standards, security, and justice,” Mamedu stated.
ActionAid Nigeria advocates for inclusive, equitable, and sustainable governance that reflects ordinary Nigerians’ lived realities.
