Obaseki Calls For Calm After Controversial Edo Election
Godwin Obaseki, the governor of Edo State, has urged the state’s people to remain calm and peaceful following Saturday’s contentious governorship election.
In a statewide broadcast, Obaseki acknowledged Edo residents’ widespread disappointment and frustration with the election, citing the “blatant disregard for processes and law” that marred it.
Obaseki expressed deep concern about the perceived “seizure of power” from the people and the “travesty of democracy” that occurred.
He acknowledged the emotional distress and anger felt by many people, particularly those who felt powerless in the face of actions taken by institutions designed to protect them.
However, he urged all Edo residents to “remain calm and avoid resorting to violence and property destruction.”
Obaseki emphasised that “peace and justice will always win in the end,” and encouraged residents to seek legal recourse to address their grievances.
While acknowledging the concerns about the election’s integrity, Obaseki assured the public that the government is still committed to their well-being and security.
He encouraged Edo residents to conduct their lawful business with confidence.
The governor’s call for calm comes amid widespread criticism of how the election was conducted. Many people have expressed concern about alleged irregularities, voter intimidation, and election results manipulation.
It remains to be seen how the ongoing legal challenges and subsequent political landscape will play out in Edo State.
