Nigerian Red Cross Society Battles Food Insecurity, Launches N2.5bn Fundraiser
Abuja, Nigeria –The Nigerian Red Cross Society intends to raise N2.5 billion to mitigate the effects of severe hunger and malnutrition in Nigeria.
According to widely circulated reports, unless emergency measures are activated and implemented, over 31.5 million Nigerians will be food insecure between January and October 2024. Conflict, inflation, and economic challenges exacerbate the situation.
According to relative market indices, by October 2024, prices for staple foods such as grains will have at least tripled. According to the Famine Early Warning System, Severe Acute Malnutrition in children has increased by at least 70% since September 2023. Further research indicates that increased support from other partners, organisations, and individuals is most urgent right now.
The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS), with the support of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), has launched an Emergency Appeal to help the most vulnerable people in Nigeria over the next 18 months.
The target sum is N2.5 billion. The appeal aims to improve livelihoods, health, nutrition, and WASH services in the most affected areas.
The combination of ongoing conflict, economic instability, and high food prices is expected to drive food insecurity and malnutrition challenges until 2024.
To avoid this possibility, the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) will hold its first-ever Annual Fundraising Gala Night on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.
This event, themed “Keeping Humanity Alive,” aims to raise N2.5 billion to support the Hunger Crisis Appeal and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) programs throughout Nigeria.
Attendees include 200 partners from business, civil society, politics, entertainment, and media. We will also be able to participate in a tombola and pledge support via donation cards.
According to NRCS President Prince Oluyemisi Adeaga, “We are thrilled to bring together leaders and influencers from various industries for an unforgettable night dedicated to making a genuine difference. The funds raised will directly benefit our ongoing efforts to alleviate hunger and improve water and sanitation conditions in vulnerable communities.”
Corporate sponsors from the financial, insurance, food and beverage, telecom, and hospitality sectors, including Guarantee Trust, were invited to support the event.
Holding Company Plc. These partners will make certain that all proceeds from the Gala Night go directly to the Hunger Crisis Appeal and WASH rehabilitation projects.
Making a meaningful difference in the lives of those in need.
“We invite our partners and the public to join us in this noble cause. We currently need more partners and donors, so any individual or organisation that anyone interested in contributing should visit https://www.redcrossnigeria.org/nigeria-hunger-crisis-appeal.
Your participation and contributions will be critical in boosting the resilience of communities across Nigeria facing severe hardship.”
The Nigerian Red Cross Society was founded by Nigeria’s Parliament in 1960 and recognised by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in 1961.
A pillar of humanitarian aid in Nigeria. With a large volunteer network, the NRCS provides critical services such as disaster relief, health education, and emergency response.
As Nigeria continues to struggle with severe food insecurity, exacerbated by economic challenges and conflict, this Gala Night will serve as an important platform for rallying support for those in desperate need.
