Obi Mourns Onyeka Onwenu: She Left Us With ‘One Love, Keep Us Together’ Song
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s Presidential Candidate for the 2023 general election, says Onyeka Onwenu’s death has devastated him.
“Yesterday, I watched as doctors unsuccessfully attempted to save her life following her elegant performance on stage.”
In a statement signed by Yunusa Tanko, POMR Spokesman, Obi said she left us with a striking song in her last performance on earth: One Love Keeps Us Together.
Obi wrote on his X handle. “Yesterday was a completely devastating moment for me, as I witnessed a tragic event that will live in my memory forever.
“I was present at the event where the iconic song star, Onyeka Onwenu, performed a couple of her songs, culminating in her famous song, One Love Keeps Us Together.
“It was a beautiful performance, but we had no idea it would be her final bow. Just a few minutes after her performance, she drank some water, collapsed, and was rushed to the hospital. I followed her to the hospital, where I watched in agony as the doctors and medical staff fought tirelessly to save her life, doing everything they could to bring her back to life but eventually delivering the heartbreaking news that she had died. Despite their best efforts, she died after more than two hours of intense struggle.
‘My thoughts are with her children, family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. May we have the strength and courage to bear this irreparable loss. Onyeka Onwenu was a national treasure, a shining star who inspired generations through her music, activism, and unwavering commitment to the arts. Her death is a tremendous loss to the entire country, and she will be greatly missed.
“I would like to thank everyone who accompanied her to the hospital yesterday. Special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. John Momoh, Mr. and Mrs. Okonkwo, and Mr. Okpara, who were with her in her final moments. Governor Alex Otti joined in, as did Mr. Femi Ajayi, who returned to the hospital this morning to finalise the details of her death.
“May her soul rest in peace, and let her legacy inspire and unite us all. My heartfelt condolences to her family, the entertainment industry, and the country at large. May we take comfort in the memories we shared with her and the influence she had on our lives?
